Someone is approaching. You can almost make them out — a figure moving through heat and chaos, their form broken up by distance and atmosphere. The vertical lines are faint, deliberate. They are there if you look.

But the question the painting actually asks is harder than identifying the figure. It's what their arrival means. Friend or stranger. Comfort or disruption. The moment before you know which.

Built in acrylic on a dark ground with layered impasto marks in gold, crimson, white, and earth tones, the surface carries the energy of that uncertainty — worked, scraped, and rebuilt until the tension felt right. The vertical figure emerges from the chaos the way people sometimes do — gradually, and then all at once.
