The painting doesn't tell you how many started. It doesn't need to. The space around these three figures — the vast, indifferent orange and red of the desert — says everything about what the journey has already cost.

The sun hangs like a weight rather than a source of light. The ground rises to meet them. There is no destination visible.

This is the Internal distilled to its most minimal — three marks on a field of heat, still moving.
